Liverpool vs Newcastle United
(England – Premier League)
Start date: 14. Sep 2019, 16:30/ 7:30 a.m. ET
Location: Liverpool Venue: Anfield
Referee: Andre Marriner, England
Premier League leaders Liverpool remain the only team in the land yet to drop a point this season and Newcastle United have the unenviable honor of attempting to stop their onslaught on Saturday. England’s top flight gets back underway following the international break and Steve Bruce’s Magpies hope to stun the bookmakers by pilfering points from their trip to Anfield.
Newcastle have lost 75 top-flight games against Liverpool – more than against any other team – while the Reds are chasing a slice of history to become just the fourth team to win 14 consecutive matches at this standard in England – and the first to score more than once in each of those games.
Newcastle Team News
Steve Bruce is going through a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, with six key players ruled out for this already tricky trip to Anfield. Defenders Florian Lejuene and DeAndre Yedlin, midfielders Allan Saint-Maximin, and forwards Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll miss out. Key man Miguel Almiron may not be fit to start due to playing “on the other side of the world,” according to the gaffer.
Liverpool Team News
Jurgen Klopp only has a couple of worries in regards to injuries at the moment. Persistently injured midfielder Naby Keita remains sidelined while goalkeeper Alisson is still out of action.
Head To Head
Newcastle have not won at Anfield in more than 25 years, although they gave Liverpool a scare as the title-chasers scored in the final five minutes of normal time for a hard-fought 3-2 win at St James’ Park in May.
Liverpool extended their unbeaten run at home in this fixture to 23 matches with a 4-0 win here last season, including a Salah penalty and goals for Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho.
They have 85 wins to Newcastle’s 50 in the all-time head-to-head, the most memorable recent example of which may have been the 4-3 win at Anfield in 1997, when the Magpies came from 3-0 down in the 70th minute to make the score 3-3 with two minutes of normal time remaining.
Robbie Fowler then scored his second of the match with a 90th-minute winner to leave Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish devastated in the away dugout.
