Match News

Villarreal, for their part, are seeking their first win of the season. They opened their season with an incredible 4-4 draw at home to Granada before losing 2-1 away to Levante, so securing a victory before the international break would do their confidence some good.
The Yellow Submarine may have started the campaign badly, but the group are confident that they will be able to quickly turn things around. That is why they don’t fear Madrid and they hope to tighten up in the back and frustrate Los Blancos, who usually suffer when they come to La Ceramica. In fact, of the last seven trips Madrid have made to Villarreal, five have ended in a draw. However, as easy as it is to say, Villarreal making their defence more impenetrable is not going to be an easy task.
Thasn’t been an easy summer for Real Madrid. From their underwhelming pre-season, which was highlighted by the 7-3 defeat to Atletico Madrid in New Jersey, to their unusual activity in the transfer market, spending heavily but not on starting level players, to the doubts that they’ve come into the new season with, things have not been ideal. Los Blancos kicked off the new season with a 3-1 win against Celta Vigo at Balaidos, but then they stumbled at home to Real Valladolid, drawing 1-1. What is clear is that the memories from the dismal 2018/19 campaign are still there in the minds of the supporters. As such, Madrid are coming into Sunday night’s game at the Estadio de la Ceramica with the knowledge that they need to secure all three points. Their last two campaigns in LaLiga Santander have been dreadful, and they will have their work cut out to keep the pace with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top.
The absence of Eden Hazard for the match, one of Madrid’s nine players to have picked up an injury this summer, leads to a starting line-up that was tested out a little in pre-season: Luka Jovic partnering Karim Benzema in attack, which will once again penalise Vinicius Junior, as has been the case since Zinedine Zidane’s return. Luka Modric, meanwhile, is set to return after his suspension, while Gareth Bale will retain his place in the XI.

Villarreal Squads & Team News

Villarreal have no new injury problems to contend with, and long-term absentee Bruno Soriano is the only man missing. There is little doubting that the 2018-19 campaign will be seen as a huge disappointing for Villarreal when considering that they ended the season in 14th, which represented their lowest finish since 2011-12.

Indeed, since returning to the top flight in 2013, the Yellow Submarine have posted finishes of sixth, sixth, fourth, fifth and fifth before a disappointing 2018-19 season brought them just 44 points.

Only the three relegated clubs – Girona, Huesca and Rayo Vallecano – won fewer league games than Villarreal (10) last term, and it would be fair to say that the new season has not started too well.

Javi Calleja’s side opened their campaign with a stunning 4-4 draw at home to Granada on the opening weekend. Villarreal actually led 4-2 entering the final 15 minutes of that contest before the visitors netted twice late on to ensure that the thrilling match would finish all square.

The Yellow Submarine then suffered a 2-1 loss at Levante last time out with Roger Marti scoring twice from the penalty spot. Once more, Calleja’s team had the lead deep into the second half, and shipping late goals will be a concern ahead of Sunday’s clash against the capital giants.

It was a busy summer for Villarreal in terms of transfers, with Ruben Pena, Raul Albiol and Alberto Moreno among those to come through the door. Meanwhile, the likes of Pablo Fornals, Roberto Soriano, Denis Cheryshev and Nicola Sansone all left the club.

Madrid will enter Sunday’s match as the favourites; Villarreal have a fairly strong recent record against Los Blancos, though, losing just one of the last four league meetings between the two teams. What’s more, each of the last two La Liga contests at the home of the Yellow Submarine have finished 2-2.

The hosts might well again look to Samuel Chukwueze for inspiration as the 20-year-old continues to impress. Indeed, the attacker is already off the mark in the league this term, while he scored eight times in all competitions for the club during the 2018-19 campaign.

Current Villarreal squad is:

Forwards: Carlos Bacca, Gerard Moreno, Karl Toko Ekambi

Midfilders: Santi Cazorla, Bruno Soriano, Vicente Iborra, Moi Gómez, Manu Trigueros, Leonardo Suárez, André Zambo Anguissa, Ramiro Guerra, Samuel Chukwueze, Javier Ontiveros, Manuel Morlanes, Santiago Cáseres, Victor Moya, Iván Martín

Defenders: Raúl Albiol, Mario Gaspar, Alberto Moreno, Ramiro Funes Mori, Rubén Peña, Xavier Quintilla, Pau Torres, Andrei Ratiu

Goalkeepers: Mariano Barbosa, Andrés Fernández, Sergio Asenjo

Possible Villarreal starting XI: Fernandez; Gaspar, Torres, Albiol, A. Moreno; Iborra, Cazorla, Gomez, Chukwueze, Ekambi; G. Moreno.

Real Madrid Squads & Team News

Keylor Navas has travelled with the squad despite being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, but Madrid are without Eden Hazard, Brahim Diaz, Isco, James Rodriguez, Marco Asensio and Rodrygo Goes for Sunday’s encounter.
Madrid made an impressive start to the new La Liga season by recording a 3-1 victory at Celta Vigo on the opening weekend. Indeed, in what was a potential banana-skin game, Zidane’s side put on a professional performance to start their campaign with all three points.

The European giants would have been looking to put another victory on the board last weekend – Valladolid had other ideas, though, and were well worth their point at the Bernabeu. Despite dropping two points, Madrid are third in the table, with only Sevilla and Atletico Madrid winning both of their games thus far.

Injuries to key attackers in the early stages of the season have seen Gareth Bale take on an important role at the club. The Wales international was widely expected to leave the Bernabeu during the summer but is now needed to play a part for the club in the coming weeks.

Bale was quiet against Valladolid after impressing against Celta, but the former Tottenham Hotspur attacker will be feeling much better about his position at the club. The 30-year-old will again be needed this weekend with the likes of Eden Hazard still unavailable for selection.

It seems unlikely that either Paris Saint-Germain attacker Neymar or Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba will arrive before Monday’s European transfer deadline, and Zidane is said to be furious with his club for failing to sign the latter during this summer’s window.

Alphonse Areola could arrive at the Bernabeu as part of a swap for Keylor Navas ahead of Monday’s deadline, although there are not expected to be any further deals. Whether the team have enough to challenge for La Liga this season remains to be seen, and it will be very interesting to see how the campaign develops.

In terms of what is ahead, Madrid will host Levante in their first game after the international break before the small matter of a trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on September 18. The month will then finish with league games against Sevilla, Osasuna and Atletico Madrid.

Current Real Madrid squad is:

Forwards: Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Mariano Díaz, Lucas Vázquez, Luka Jović, Vinícius Júnior

Midfilders: Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos, Isco, James Rodríguez, Casemiro, Lucas Silva, Marco Asensio, Federico Valverde, Brahim Díaz, Rodrygo

Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Nacho Fernández, Raphaël Varane, Daniel Carvajal, Álvaro Odriozola, Ferland Mendy, Éder Militão, Javi Hernández, Adrián De La Fuente

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Thibaut Courtois, Toni Fuidias

Possible Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo; Casemiro, Modric, Kroos; Bale, Benzema, Vinicius.
